Think LONG-TERM with your career
When looking for opportunities, it is most important to take into consideration how your choices will impact your long-term goals. The past and the present forms your future but you can only influence the latter, so it is important to take into account how your current actions will affect your career in the future. In a world where few people plan with a truly long-term view, those who do are richly rewarded.
Time is your most precious asset, and long-term planning can help you to avoid spending time going down a path you could otherwise confidently rule out if you thought about it more. This is because long-term planning helps you to make better decisions in the short-term. For example, is the new opportunity that might pay you a slightly higher salary in the short-term also going to give you opportunity for career growth, or the skills and experience you need to get to the next step in your career?
Having a long-term vision to work towards can also help with self-motivation in the present, and this also makes it more likely that you will eventually succeed in your career. Where do you want to see yourself five, ten or twenty years from now?
Outline your plans for your long-term objectives – how will you get there? Long-term planning could mean both working forwards from your current opportunities and working backwards from where you would like to end up. What skills and experience do you need? What do you need to learn? Who do you need to know?
