AI And Your Resume

February 28, 2023

With the arrival of ChatGPT and Bard it begs the question of whether this new AI tool can be used by job seekers to write resumes. Often, we are asked by candidates for help with resume writing as it is a daunting task. Some already know what to do and just need a little help with polishing it up. Others need to start from scratch, have no idea where to begin and could really do with some guidance.

In come our friends at Microsoft and Google with this ground-breaking AI in late 2022. As far as I am aware, I’m yet to receive an AI-generated resume or cover letter (but I suspect it’s only a matter of time) so I decided to see how this tool might work.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT and its lesser-known competitor Bard, is the hottest new technology that has the tech world abuzz. Only out for a few months, it is currently free and it generates responses and information based on the dialogue provided to it. It is revolutionizing the content space.

As ChatGPT can generate human-like text in response to user prompts, it basically provides an answer to any question. I asked it to describe itself and here’s what it told me : “ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. It is a state-of-the-art machine learning model that uses deep neural networks to generate human-like responses to natural language inputs. ChatGPT is capable of understanding and responding to a wide range of topics and can provide information, advice, or assistance to users in real-time. Its abilities include natural language processing, text generation, question-answering, and conversational engagement. ChatGPT can be used for a variety of applications, such as chatbots, virtual assistants, customer service, and more.” Proceed with some caution. These last few weeks have shown how glitchy it can be and reminded people this is tech still in its infancy.

Could AI be useful for resume writing?

The short answer is yes! AI could help you build a resume from scratch freeing up time – however it is essential that you (the human!) and the person whose life experience this document is about, do not rely on this tech alone but consider it a helpful starting point if you decide to try it.

For example, you can ask ChatGPT to “build me a resume”, and the AI will ask for your information (such as name/ job titles/ education, etc.) and will write a basic resume document based on this info. Handy right?!

Have a look at what it told me when I asked it how it might be able to assist…

This AI has lots of beneficial strengths to create a solid resume foundation, but this doesn’t eliminate what YOU must do to ensure you are working with the best possible document to sell you and your background/ experience to employers here in Cayman. No technology, no matter how clever, can ever truly demonstrate your experience as well as you can and is not a replacement for putting in some graft. It is up to you to provide it with the right info and proofread and edit the results.

From what I’ve seen so far, I still believe a bot can only do so much as the resume is such a personal document – but it can certainly help make a start and save you some time if you’ve been staring at a blank Word doc for days!

Like many things, nothing will beat a human touch and the team at The Agency are always here to provide you with resume/ CV feedback also!
